With an increasingly diverse population in our workplaces and communities, the concept of diversity must become increasingly expansive. We’re not only talking about only race here, but the diversities among us to include: religion, gender, sexual orientation, education, income, height, weight and more. Learn how minimizing any of these definers can be a disservice to your organization’s diversity program. Attendees will also gain a better understanding of bias and learn how both implicit and explicit bias affects the workplace. We will wrap up the session with "Blue Sky vs Green Sky…a Story of Multiple Truths"...“There are multiple perspectives and versions of the truth. Ky Oday was born in St. Louis, MO to Patricia and Yusuf Oday. His given name is “Kulmeyeh” (cool-me-yeh), which in Somali means “one who calls people together.”

Ky attended elementary school in St. Louis. During this time, public schools were in the process of ending race-based segregation through desegregation, also known as school integration. Ky was bussed 70 miles a day to Chesterfield, MO. Ky began 5th grade in Detroit, Michigan where he attended the neighborhood school. The situation was far from ideal. Ky moved with his family to Grand Junction, Colorado two months into 5th grade.

Ky graduated from Grand Junction High School, attended Mesa State College (now Colorado Mesa University) and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in public relations and a minor in marketing.

As mortgage loan officer for the last 15 years, Ky communicates with applicants, sellers and buyers, their agents, and financial institutions. He has most recently shared his skills with Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, CO as Coordinator of Student Diversity.

Ky’s lifelong passion for bringing people together has placed him in many leadership positions throughout his life. From Little League coach to high school football coach, Ky has always valued giving back to our community. His personal and professional experiences provide a unique and valuable perspective on DEI.
